Helao Shityuwete, Namibian liberation veteran, dies at 92

Namibia is mourning the death of liberation struggle veteran and former political prisoner Helao Shityuwete, who passed away on August 29, 2026, shortly after his 92nd birthday.

Shityuwete was a prominent advocate for workers' rights and a former prisoner on Robben Island, where he was held alongside figures such as Nelson Mandela. His involvement in the struggle began at the Walvis Bay docks and included military training in Tanzania. Following Namibia's independence, he served in the labour ministry and worked to preserve the history of the liberation movement.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah described him as a “courageous patriot” and a “distinguished son” of the nation. McHenry Venaani, president of the Popular Democratic Movement, also paid tribute, describing Shityuwete as a “great personality” whose life was defined by courage, humility, and sacrifice for the country's freedom.
