HELB launches new training loans for civil servants and KMTC students
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has launched two major financing initiatives in Kenya. First, a new training loan facility for civil servants offers up to Sh500,000 to support academic and professional advancement. This revolving fund is available to employees within the National Government, county governments, the National Police Service, and the Teachers Service Commission. The loans carry a four per cent annual interest rate and can be repaid over 12 to 72 months through monthly check-off deductions.
Additionally, HELB has opened the 2026/2027 loan application window for students at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) enrolled in Certificate and Diploma courses. The application period began on August 21 and will close on September 30, 2026. This move follows a commitment by President William Ruto to integrate KMTC learners into the Higher Education Financing programme, providing them with structured government funding similar to university students.
