Helen Mirren discusses past cocaine use and ethical decision to quit

British actress Helen Mirren has revealed in an interview that she used cocaine occasionally during parties in the early 1980s. The Oscar winner explained that her decision to immediately and permanently stop using the substance was driven by an ethical realization regarding the drug trade.

Mirren stated that her perspective changed upon learning that Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie had funded his life in South America through international drug trafficking. She noted that the knowledge of the cruelty and global criminal supply chains involved in the trade transformed her view of the substance from a casual social habit into a matter of conscience.

In addition to her experiences with cocaine, Mirren recalled a single experiment with LSD during her twenties.
