Helen Mirren stars in Patricia Highsmith thriller ‘A Talent for Murder’

In the upcoming thriller ‘A Talent for Murder’, directed by Anton Corbijn, Helen Mirren portrays the reclusive and abrasive author Patricia Highsmith. Mirren has noted that playing Highsmith was one of her most challenging roles due to the stark differences between her own personality and the writer’s abrasive nature toward the end of her life.

The film, an adaptation of Joanna Murray-Smith’s play ‘Switzerland’, follows Edward Ridgeway, played by Alden Ehrenreich. Ridgeway is a publisher’s emissary attempting to secure a new contract from Highsmith. The plot involves Highsmith challenging Ridgeway to help her devise a fictional murder that could be committed without detection, leading to a blurring of reality and fiction.

Critics have highlighted Ehrenreich’s performance, noting his ability to navigate the character’s shift between a well-meaning professional and a figure reminiscent of Highsmith’s famous creation, Tom Ripley.
