Helgoland considers land expansion to combat space shortages

The North Sea island of Helgoland is considering a major land expansion project to address severe space shortages. Due to the main island's limited size of approximately one square kilometer, there is little room for new residential housing, businesses, or tourism infrastructure.

A proposed plan involves using massive sand nourishment to connect the main island with the neighboring Düne. While a similar proposal was rejected by residents in 2011, local stakeholders, including tourism operators, express concern that without expansion, the island may struggle to retain its permanent population despite a stable tourism sector.
