Helgoland launches major harbor upgrade and new research building projects

The German Waterways and Shipping Office (WSA) has begun work on a large‑scale reconstruction of the South Harbor on Helgoland to accommodate new, ten‑metre‑long multipurpose vessels. The project includes extending the breakwater, deepening the basin and investigating the site for unexploded ordnance. Costs are projected in the double‑digit‑million‑euro range, with full construction slated to start in spring 2027.

At the island’s Nordosthafen, the former aquarium is being replaced by a modern, glass‑clad building for the Alfred‑Wegener‑Institute (AWI). The facility, funded by the federal government, Schleswig‑Holstein and the Helgoland municipality, will expand the institute’s research on the North Sea, Wadden Sea and climate impacts. A prominent crane dominates the site, making the construction visible to visitors.

Both projects reflect increased federal investment in Helgoland’s maritime infrastructure and scientific capabilities.
