Helicobacter pylori volatilomic signatures identified for potential diagnostics

Researchers have characterized the volatilomic signature of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium identified as a major risk factor for gastric cancer. The study aimed to identify unique metabolic byproducts released by the bacteria to facilitate the development of non-invasive diagnostic methods.

Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, the study identified 21 volatile compounds that showed consistent differences between H. pylori cultures and the cultivation medium. Of these, 11 compounds were found to be elevated in the presence of the bacteria, including various ketones, alcohols, an aromatic compound, an aldehyde, a hydrocarbon, and a sulfur compound. Conversely, 10 compounds showed decreased levels in the culture's headspace.
