Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 crashes in Ondo State, killing all on board

A Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed in a swampy area near Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Monday, October 5, 2026. The aircraft, registered as NGR 931, was performing a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos when it disappeared from radar at approximately 09:13 local time.

Reports on the death toll vary. While initial reports indicated 32 fatalities (25 passengers and 7 crew members), subsequent updates from the Nigerian Air Force cited 25 people on board, consisting of 20 passengers and 5 crew members. President Bola Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash.

Search and rescue operations faced difficulties due to the difficult terrain, which includes marshes and shallow creeks. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed swamp buggies to assist in recovery efforts. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State confirmed that no survivors were found at the site.
