Helium supply remains fragile following Qatar infrastructure damage
The global helium market continues to face supply chain vulnerabilities following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar, which accounts for approximately 35% of global helium output, has experienced significant infrastructure damage at Ras Laffan. Because helium is recovered as a byproduct of natural gas processing, disruptions to liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations directly constrain helium production.
While the market has adapted through redirected supplies and inventory drawdowns, the underlying issue of supply concentration remains. The shortage is expected to persist for up to five years. This scarcity creates ethical and economic challenges regarding the allocation of the gas between critical sectors, including medical imaging (MRI), semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, and scientific research.
