Hellenic Basketball Federation clarifies Giannis Antetokounmpo's absence

The Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) has issued a clarification regarding the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Greek national team roster for upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Latvia and Spain.

According to the EOK, the decision was not driven by financial issues. While the federation and the national coach requested state subsidies for the player's insurance, it was not possible due to the specific timing of the start of a new chapter in his career. The EOK noted that it has historically covered all NBA-mandated security requirements for Antetokounmpo using available funds without needing state assistance.

Additionally, the federation explained the absence of Alexander Samantouridis, Neoklis Avdalas, and Vangelis Zougris. Although these players wished to participate, their respective NCAA colleges denied leave, stating that participation would result in dismissal from their studies and collegiate teams due to a lack of distance learning options.
