Greek College Thessaloniki parents demand justice after basketball scandal
The Parents' Association of the Greek College of Thessaloniki has issued a formal statement expressing deep disappointment following allegations of match-fixing during the school basketball championship's Final Four in Paphos, Cyprus. The association described the officiating during the match against Anagennisi Patras as 'extremely negative and extremely aggressive.'
During the game, which took place in March, the Patras team was awarded 52 free throws, leading to a 64-60 victory. The incident is currently under investigation by Greek judicial authorities regarding potential match manipulation. Six arrest warrants have been issued, including one for Vangelis Liolios, the President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK).
The parents are calling on competent authorities to restore the privileges and academic credits that the students were unfairly denied due to the results. They emphasized the significant personal and financial sacrifices made by families to support these student-athletes, who balance rigorous training with academic responsibilities.
