Hellenic Food Authority inspects fruit juices for authenticity
The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) has launched inspections to verify the authenticity of fruit juices, specifically targeting products marketed as ‘100% natural’. The initiative aims to identify practices that may mislead consumers, with a primary focus on detecting the presence of exogenous sugars.
Following a specific complaint, laboratory tests confirmed the presence of added sugars in orange and apple juices. These products were deemed non-compliant and have been removed from the market. This determination was made following a scientific evaluation by EFET’s Scientific Council (ESET), in collaboration with the General State Laboratory and the Spanish Agri-Food Arbitration Laboratory.
In addition to juice inspections, EFET is conducting systematic sampling and laboratory analysis of staple Greek dietary products, including olive oil, honey, and dairy, to ensure authenticity and compliance with standards. The authority is also participating in coordinated European actions to combat food fraud.
