Hellenic Police conduct nationwide helmet safety crackdown

The Hellenic Police have intensified their 'Zero Tolerance for Non-Use of Helmets' campaign across Greece. Between September 14 and September 20, 2026, authorities conducted 21,522 inspections targeting motorcycle riders, passengers, ATV users, and Light Personal Electric Vehicle (LPEV) operators.

Nationwide, the crackdown resulted in 1,990 driver violations and 227 passenger violations. Attica saw the highest concentration of offenses with 847 recorded cases, followed by the South Aegean and the Ionian Islands. In the Western Macedonia region, 409 inspections led to nine recorded violations.

Under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), penalties for failing to wear a helmet have been strengthened. Motorcycle drivers face a 350 euro fine and a 30-day driving license suspension. Passengers also face a 350 euro fine. For LPEV operators, the fine is set at 30 euros. Police emphasize that these measures aim to prevent serious and fatal traffic accidents.
