Hellenic Police warn of SMS phishing scam involving fake traffic fines

The Hellenic Police have issued a warning regarding a sophisticated phishing scam targeting citizens via SMS. Scammers send text messages claiming there are unpaid traffic violations and provide a link to a fraudulent website.

These fake websites are designed to look like official government platforms, displaying detailed, fabricated information such as vehicle speed, speed limits, violation dates, and penalty points. To create a sense of urgency and pressure victims into making immediate payments, the scammers offer a fake 50% discount on the fine if paid within a specific timeframe.

The authorities emphasize that neither the Hellenic Police nor official services like gov.gr will ever send SMS messages containing links for fine payments. Citizens are advised to delete suspicious messages, avoid clicking links, and never enter personal or banking details on unknown sites. Official payments should only be made through verified government digital services by manually typing the official web address into a browser.
