Hellenic Psychiatric Association addresses mental health stigma in Greece

The Hellenic Psychiatric Association (HPA) has issued a call to address the persistent stigma surrounding mental health disorders in Greek society. The association notes that prejudices and stereotypes continue to lead to the exclusion and marginalization of individuals living with mental illness.

Key factors contributing to this stigma include the unscientific association of severe mental disorders with dangerousness, the misconception that such conditions are incurable despite recent therapeutic progress, and a lack of acceptance regarding modern community-based care models. The HPA also highlighted concerns regarding the violation of medical privacy and personal data.

These societal attitudes often lead to ‘self-stigma,’ where individuals internalize negative perceptions, resulting in low self-esteem and a reluctance to seek necessary rehabilitation services. In observance of World Mental Health Day, the HPA emphasized the theme ‘Listening to Lived Experiences: Real Voices, Real Change,’ advocating for the active participation of individuals with lived experience in the decision-making processes and organization of mental health services and policies.
