Hellenic Radiological Society warns of unqualified medical imaging practices

The Hellenic Radiological Society (EAE) has issued a formal warning regarding the performance of diagnostic imaging, interpretations, and invasive medical procedures by physicians lacking the necessary qualifications and legal requirements.

In letters addressed to the Ministry of Health, the Central Health Council, and various medical associations, the EAE reported several critical issues. These include ultrasounds of the abdomen, thyroid, and breast being conducted by doctors without specific training, and the issuance of CT, MRI, and cardiac imaging reports by unauthorized personnel.

The society also raised concerns regarding image-guided invasive procedures, such as breast biopsies, noting potential deficiencies in practitioner qualifications, facility suitability, and the ability to manage complications. Furthermore, the EAE highlighted the improper use of ionizing radiation equipment without following established radiation protection protocols. The organization emphasized that short-term seminars or the mere purchase of equipment do not grant the professional right to perform these specialized medical acts.
