Hellenic Red Cross supports homeless individuals in Athens and Piraeus
The Hellenic Red Cross implemented a targeted outreach and support initiative for homeless individuals in the historic centers of Athens and Piraeus on August 31, 2026. The operation, led by the Social Welfare Sector and initiated by President Dr. Antonis Avgerinos, focused on areas identified through weekly mapping where high numbers of homeless citizens reside.
Mobile teams distributed essential supplies, including food, personal hygiene products, sleeping bags, and mats, to individuals living in precarious conditions. In addition to material aid, the teams provided first aid, mental health first aid, psychosocial support, and nursing care. They also offered information regarding social rights and connections to available health and social services.
The initiative, carried out by a specialized team of social workers, psychologists, nurses, and trained volunteers, provided comprehensive humanitarian care to a total of 120 homeless individuals.
