Greece: Plaka explosion investigation and naval shipbuilding proposal

The Greek Left Coalition is demanding a full investigation and structural inspections of surrounding buildings following a fatal explosion in Plaka that resulted in six deaths. The political group highlighted that residents had previously warned authorities in October 2025 about potential risks such as gas leaks or short circuits, but these warnings reportedly went unanswered. They are calling for transparency regarding safety protocols for tourist accommodations in densely populated historic areas.

Separately, Panos Xenokostas, President of the Hellenic Shipyards Association (EEΝ), has proposed a binding 15-year domestic shipbuilding program for the Greek Navy. The plan, presented during the Greece-Cyprus Defense Industry Day, aims to build surface vessels and submarines to ensure national autonomy. Xenokostas emphasized that long-term predictability is essential for investment in infrastructure and specialized personnel, suggesting a goal of 70% Greek added value for major projects.
