Netherlands implements national consumer fireworks ban

A national ban on most consumer fireworks has taken effect in the Netherlands as of August 1, aimed at increasing safety, reducing injury, and protecting the environment. Under the new regulations, categories F2, F3, and F4 fireworks may no longer be purchased, possessed, or ignited; only light fireworks such as sparklers (category F1) remain permitted.

To facilitate the safe disposal of existing stocks, the government is organizing a one-time national collection campaign from September 1 to October 9. Residents can surrender prohibited fireworks anonymously and without fear of fines or penalties. Specific collection points have been identified in several municipalities, including Venlo and Roermond, while residents in areas like Helmond may need to utilize nearby locations such as Eindhoven.

In Groningen, Mayor Roelien Kamminga has confirmed that no exceptions will be made for organizations or foundations to ignite fireworks, opting for a uniform ban to simplify enforcement and prevent public provocation.
