Helmond sees rise in e-bike accidents and insurance premium gaps

In Helmond, the number of bicycle accidents has risen significantly, with 135 recorded incidents in 2025 compared to 105 the previous year. Electric bicycles, including e-bikes, fatbikes, and speed pedelecs, accounted for 26.7 percent of these accidents.

This trend reflects a broader national shift in the Netherlands. While electric bikes represented 10.6 percent of national bicycle accidents in 2019, that figure rose to 22 percent by 2025. Experts note that teenagers are increasingly affected, with a 53 percent increase in injuries among those aged 12 to 17 over the last decade.

Parallel to safety concerns, insurance costs for electric bicycles in Helmond show significant variation based on location. Residents can face a premium difference of up to 186 euros per year for the same e-bike depending on their specific address within the municipality. Insurers determine these rates based on factors such as theft risk, vandalism, and historical claims data in specific postal code areas.
