Helmut Schmidt's modest retreat at Brahmsee

Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt maintained a modest private retreat at Brahmsee in Schleswig-Holstein for several decades. Despite his central role in global politics, his holiday home near Langwedel was a simple four-room wooden structure, which his former government spokesperson Klaus Bölling referred to as a ‘barrack’. The Schmidts lived in the house without heating for approximately 40 years after moving in during the spring of 1958.

Schmidt used the location to pursue his passion for sailing, often using a Conger boat or a Laser sailboat gifted to him by Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. While he did not host heads of state at the lake, he did host musicians and conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Yehudi Menuhin. He also used an outdoor sauna to discuss political matters with his friend and former Parliamentary State Secretary, Willi Berkhan.

In the years following the cessation of agricultural use of the adjacent land in 1976, the area underwent a natural transformation observed by Loki Schmidt, which eventually led to a nature project managed by the Loki Schmidt Foundation.
