Helsing AI combat jet defeats human pilots in simulation

Munich-based defense software company Helsing has reported significant progress in developing its unmanned combat aircraft, the ‘CA-1 Europa’. During a demonstration for Digital Minister Karsten Freiberger in Munich, the aircraft’s AI pilot, named ‘Centaur’, successfully won multiple simulated aerial combat engagements against experienced human pilots, including a former Bundeswehr pilot and a former Mexican Air Force pilot.

Technical Director Robert Fink stated that the development process has been accelerated through the use of ‘synthetic AI’. This technology allows the system to train in synthetically generated environments based on user-defined parameters—such as terrain, weather, and lighting—rather than relying solely on real-world military data. This method reportedly reduces training times from decades to mere minutes or hours.

Helsing, founded in 2021, has grown to approximately 1,300 employees. The company aims to conduct its first test flight of the unmanned jet next year. Company leadership emphasized that their AI technology is designed to be secure and does not pose a threat to external computer systems.
