Helsinki adopts new strategy to halve drug-related deaths

The Helsinki City Board has approved a new substance abuse strategy for the years 2026–2029, which aims to halve the number of drug-related deaths in the city. The strategy focuses on strengthening preventive work, enhancing low-threshold services, and improving public safety to address the changing substance abuse landscape.

Statistical data from 2015 to 2024 shows that Helsinki recorded 453 drug-related deaths during this period. While 2023 saw a record high of 58 deaths, the number in 2024 was 53. Data indicates that deaths are most frequent among those aged 45 and older, with 137 deaths in that group. However, drug use remains a significant cause of death for younger populations; in 2024, 40 individuals under the age of 25 died from drugs, a decrease from the previous year.

The new policy covers several key areas, including alcohol, tobacco and nicotine products, narcotics, medicinal drug abuse, and gambling. Mayor Daniel Sazonov stated that the measures are intended to create safer everyday environments for all residents by ensuring smooth access to addiction services and treatment.
