Helsinki selected to host 2030 European Athletics Championships

Helsinki has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 European Athletics Championships, following a decision by the European Athletics Council in Lausanne. The Finnish capital beat Brussels in the final selection process.

This will mark the fourth time Helsinki hosts the event, having previously held the championships in 1971, 1994, and 2012. The competitions are scheduled to take place at the renovated Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Officials noted that Helsinki's successful bid was supported by its existing infrastructure, strong athletics heritage, and confirmed financial backing from the Finnish government and the city.

While the selection is celebrated as a major sporting milestone for Finland, some local discussions have emerged regarding the projected costs. Estimates suggest the city may face expenses between 5 and 6 million euros, partly due to necessary stadium renovations and state support structures.
