Helsinki Central Station undergoes 60 million euro renovation
VR has invested over 60 million euros into the renovation of Helsinki Central Station, a project that has been ongoing for eight years. The initiative aims to transform the station from a mere transit point for 250,000 daily commuters into a destination where people spend more time. Improvements include updated facilities, enhanced accessibility through the installation of sliding doors, and the addition of new services such as restaurants and the Kansalaismuseo exhibition space.
Despite these upgrades, challenges regarding public space management remain. In 2020, seating was moved from the main entrances to the Elielinaukio end to reduce disturbances caused by certain groups and to improve security and cleanliness. While this move has reportedly decreased unrest, passengers and local business owners have noted a shortage of free seating. Critics argue that not all commuters can afford to wait in restaurants, and while some seating was added during the 2024 west wing renovation, no further plans for additional seating are currently scheduled.
