Helsinki daycare investigation after child goes missing on excursion

The National Supervisory Authority (LVV) has launched an investigation following an incident in Helsinki where a child under the age of three went missing during a daycare forest excursion. The event occurred on October 8 at the Nuotti daycare in Pukinmäki.

The child's absence was not noticed by staff until a bystander returned the child to the daycare. The child was eventually located in a schoolyard approximately 50 meters away from the group. While the child did not suffer any physical harm, officials noted the child was alone for an estimated 10 to 15 minutes.

Miia Kemppi, Helsinki's early childhood education director, characterized the incident as a result of negligence, though she noted that adult supervision levels during the trip met required ratios. The LVV investigation will determine if the provider complied with the Early Childhood Education Act, specifically examining safety arrangements, adherence to internal protocols, and subsequent corrective actions taken by the organizer.
