Helsinki metropolitan area targets increased friction tire use
Municipalities in the Helsinki metropolitan area, including Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen, are aiming to significantly increase the use of friction tires to combat street dust and improve air quality. Currently, the share of friction tires is around 40 percent, but Helsinki has set a target to raise this to 70 percent by the year 2031.
Experts from the Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY) note that studded tires are the primary cause of street dust in the region because they aggressively grind the asphalt surface. Switching to friction tires can reduce health and comfort issues caused by dust, while also lowering noise levels and road wear.
Data shows a rising trend in friction tire adoption. In Vantaa, usage increased from 28.6 percent in the 2023–2024 season to 32.4 percent in the 2025–2026 season. To support this transition, Espoo has collaborated with other cities to create informational brochures for inspection stations and tire retailers to help drivers make informed choices.
