Helsinki official supports potential merger with Vantaa

Tommi Laitio, the former director of culture and leisure for Helsinki, has expressed support for a potential merger between the cities of Helsinki and Vantaa. In a social media post, Laitio highlighted several potential advantages of such a union, including the integration of the airport with local tourism hubs and a stronger national and international voice for a city of nearly one million residents.

Laitio suggested that a larger metropolitan entity could compete on the same level as cities like Stockholm and Amsterdam. He also noted that Vantaa currently maintains a more flexible administration than Helsinki.

The discussion follows reports that an initiative to explore the merger is being developed within the Vantaa City Council by Sakari Rokkanen, Emily Strohm, and Reija Friman. Laitio raised questions regarding municipal democracy, noting that as cities grow, decision-making can become increasingly distant from citizens, potentially limiting political participation to those with significant time and resources.
