Helsinki Shipyard awarded €170 million contract for Finnish icebreaker

Helsinki Shipyard, a subsidiary of the Canadian shipbuilding group Davie, has been awarded a €170 million contract by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to construct a new icebreaker named ‘Aino’.

Designed by Railotech to navigate changing Baltic Sea ice conditions, the 96-meter vessel features a B+ ice class design optimized for maneuverability in broken and dense pack ice. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with delivery expected in September 2029. The ‘Aino’ will replace the ‘Voima’, a Class B icebreaker that has been in service for 70 years.
