Helsinki Stock Exchange sees surge in activity led by Nokia
The Helsinki Stock Exchange experienced a strong August, with the general index rising 4% and total euro-denominated turnover increasing by 55.4% compared to the previous year. This surge in activity was driven by positive second-quarter results and a recovery in the Finnish equity market, which has seen returns exceeding 13% so far this year.
Nokia has emerged as a dominant force in Finnish stock trading, with its share price increasing 123% over the past year. According to Nordnet Finland, Nokia's popularity is attracting a new wave of active retail investors to the market. Despite significant price increases, investors appear to be holding their positions rather than realizing profits.
In terms of fund investments, index funds such as OP-Maailma Indeksi and OP-Suomi Indeksi were among the most purchased by OP Pohjola customers. The OP-Suomi Indeksi saw a resurgence in popularity as investors sought to capitalize on the strengthening domestic market. Other frequently traded domestic stocks included Wärtsilä, Elisa, and Qt Group.
