Hema announces major expansion and store renovations in Belgium

Retailer Hema is undertaking a significant expansion in Belgium, planning to open five new stores this fall. The new locations will include three in Wallonia and two in Flanders, specifically in Genk and Ternat. This expansion follows the recent opening of a store at Shopping Cora Woluwe and marks the company’s first major growth in Wallonia in a decade.

In addition to new openings, Hema is renovating its existing network to create a warmer and more accessible shopping experience. The company aims to have renovated 30 to 35 stores—approximately one-third of its Belgian network—by the end of the year. A major renovation is also scheduled for the flagship store on Antwerp’s Meir next year, which will feature shop-in-shop sections and a tasting bar.

Country manager Carla Velghe indicated that the retailer sees potential for up to 150 stores in Belgium. To better serve the local market, Hema is tailoring its product range, with 20% of its approximately 30,000 items being optimized for Belgian preferences in categories such as household goods and underwear.
