Hemant Soren faces charges in Ranchi land scam case

A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ranchi has framed charges against Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in connection with an alleged 8.86-acre land scam in the Bargain area. The case, investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), involves claims of illegal land acquisition and manipulation of records involving property valued at over 31 crore rupees. Soren appeared before the court via video conferencing and pleaded not guilty, with the next hearing scheduled for November 30.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has defended the Chief Minister, labeling the proceedings as a politically motivated fabrication. Conversely, the BJP has called for Soren's immediate resignation, arguing that his continued presence in office brings disrepute to the state.

In a separate legal development, the Jharkhand High Court imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees on the Chief Minister's side for delays in filing responses regarding a case involving the SC/ST Act and ED officials. The court has directed the fine to be deposited with the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority, with the next hearing set for November 2.
