Rupi Soren, mother of Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, passes away

Rupi Soren, the mother of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and wife of late JMM founder Shibu Soren, passed away on Wednesday night at Hill View Hospital in Ranchi. She was approximately 80 years old.

Rupi Soren had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness and respiratory issues since being admitted on September 18. As her condition deteriorated, she was placed on life support. Following her passing, Chief Minister Hemant Soren cancelled his scheduled programs and a proposed state cabinet meeting was postponed.

In a social media tribute, Hemant Soren expressed his grief, stating, “After Baba left, mother was my greatest shade. Today, that shade has also merged into the lap of nature.”

Rupi Soren was a political figure herself, having contested the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in 1999. Her death follows the passing of her husband, Shibu Soren, in August 2025.
