Brazil health agencies launch organ and blood donation initiatives

Health institutions in Brazil are conducting various initiatives to promote organ and blood donation. In Minas Gerais, Fhemig is participating in the ‘Setembro Verde’ campaign, organizing lectures and training to improve the transplant process and raise awareness about the importance of expressing the desire to be a donor to one's family.

In Ponte Nova, the Hemonúcleo has opened a new headquarters following a R$ 14 million investment. The facility, funded by the Minas Gerais and Federal governments, aims to increase hematological assistance capacity, with the potential to serve up to 120 donors per day.

Additionally, Hemominas has deployed mobile collection units at the Cidade Administrativa in Belo Horizonte to encourage regular blood donation among state employees. This effort comes as Hemominas reports that blood stocks are 33.40% below adequate levels, with certain blood types currently in critical condition.

In Santa Catarina, recent data shows that 1,167 transplants were performed between January and August 2026. The state reported a 46% conversion rate from potential donors to effective donations, noting that family refusal and clinical contraindications remain significant challenges.
