Hemophilia treatment continuity critical for patients in Ecuador

Medical experts in Ecuador are emphasizing the critical importance of continuous treatment for individuals living with hemophilia. Hemophilia is a disorder caused by a deficiency in specific coagulation factors, which can lead to internal bleeding in muscles, organs, and joints. In severe cases, spontaneous bleeding can occur without visible injury or trauma.

Interrupting treatment or prophylaxis poses significant risks, including permanent joint damage, chronic pain, and loss of mobility, which can impact a patient's ability to work or study. While treating active bleeding is essential, the World Federation of Hemophilia notes that prophylaxis is necessary to prevent episodes and protect long-term health.

In Ecuador, the Ministry of Public Health utilizes a clinical practice guide for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital hemophilia, originally published in 2016 and currently undergoing updates. Hematologist Jhonny Carranza from Hospital Eugenio Espejo stated that maintaining treatment is vital for preserving autonomy and preventing life-threatening emergencies.
