Hempfield upsets No. 2 Canon-McMillan in overtime football thriller
Hempfield secured a 38-34 overtime victory against No. 2 Canon-McMillan in a WPIAL Class 6A Quad County South matchup. Junior quarterback Carden Lippman led the Spartans with 340 passing yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 87 yards and the decisive one-yard touchdown run in overtime.
Canon-McMillan forced overtime after Ty Jansma connected with Roman Cimarolli on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 27 seconds remaining in regulation. In the overtime period, a sack on Jansma forced Canon-McMillan to settle for a 34-yard field goal by Rhys Maetz. Hempfield responded on their first possession with Lippman’s rushing touchdown to seal the win.
Andrew Brentz contributed significantly to the Hempfield offense, scoring three total touchdowns through a combination of receiving and rushing. For Canon-McMillan, Bryce Collins recorded 130 rushing yards in the first half, and Roman Cimarolli provided key plays including a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
