Henan Man Kills Village Leader’s Family, Police Launch Manhunt

On July 30, a 51‑year‑old tenant, Xia Fu‑gang, attacked his neighbor Hou Mouli and members of Hou’s family in Xiping County, Henan Province. The assault left at least one person dead and four others injured. Police responded with a large‑scale manhunt, deploying dozens of special‑police units, helicopters, drones, heat‑imaging equipment and even harvesters to search the surrounding corn fields. Rewards of 20,000–50,000 yuan were offered for information leading to the suspect’s capture.

Social media in mainland China showed a wave of public sympathy for Xia, with some netizens calling him “a hero who eliminates a village bully” and posting messages offering food, water and fuel to aid his escape. Authorities have since removed many of these comments and continue the intensive search.

The incident has sparked debate over village power dynamics and the community’s response to perceived injustice.
