Hendrick Motorsports faces championship challenges after Byron engine failure

William Byron’s championship prospects at Hendrick Motorsports have been severely impacted following a mechanical failure during the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. After spinning in Turns 3 and 4 on Lap 315, Byron’s No. 24 Chevrolet suffered a complete engine failure while lining up for a restart. The incident resulted in a 37th-place finish, leaving him 114 points behind the leader and 16th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings.

NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick suggested that Byron is effectively out of the championship race, noting that the points gap is likely too large to close. Harvick recommended that the No. 24 team shift its focus to supporting teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott.

Despite the setback for Byron, Hendrick Motorsports remains competitive in the postseason. Kyle Larson secured a fifth-place finish at Darlington, marking his tenth top-five result of the season, while Chase Elliott sits eighth in the standings. The organization heads into the next round at WWT Raceway looking to maintain its championship pedigree.
