Hendrik Wüst visits Turkey for high-level economic and diplomatic talks

Hendrik Wüst, the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, conducted a three-day official visit to Turkey, marking the first such trip by a current leader of the German state. The visit commemorated the 65th anniversary of the 1961 recruitment agreement that brought hundreds of thousands of Turkish workers to Germany.

Wüst held a high-profile, 50-minute meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara. The discussions focused on economic cooperation, the modernization of the EU-Turkey Customs Union, and visa facilitation for business travelers. Wüst also addressed the social importance of the Turkish community in North Rhine-Westphalia, noting that the descendants of the original guest workers are now integral to German society.

The visit drew political scrutiny in Germany. Members of the SPD criticized Wüst for conducting what they termed “highly unusual” foreign policy, suggesting his actions could undermine the authority of the Federal Chancellor. Additionally, questions were raised regarding whether Wüst addressed human rights and the rule of law during his talks with Erdoğan.

In addition to meeting the President, Wüst met with Turkey’s Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır to discuss high-tech projects and investment opportunities. The trip included a visit to a Henkel plant in Ankara and an economic conference in Istanbul.
