Hendrik Wüst calls for fight against migration-based discrimination

North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) has called for a concerted effort by politics, media, and civil society to combat discrimination against people with migration backgrounds. Speaking during a debate marking the 65th anniversary of the German-Turkish recruitment agreement, Wüst noted that individuals with foreign-sounding names, specific skin colors, or certain religions still face disadvantages when seeking employment, apprenticeships, or housing.

Wüst emphasized that even citizens born in Germany with German nationality are often still perceived as foreigners. He described the discrimination as ranging from overt to subtle or unconscious.

In response, SPD parliamentary group leader Jochen Ott proposed the establishment of a memorial day in North Rhine-Westphalia to honor the immigrant generation from all former recruitment countries. The proposal includes flying flags on public buildings as a gesture of gratitude and recognition. Ott also highlighted the historical exploitation and discrimination faced by the first generation of guest workers.
