Hendrik Wüst honors guest workers 65 years after recruitment agreement

North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst honored the contributions of guest workers during a ceremony at Düsseldorf Airport, marking 65 years since the recruitment agreement between Germany and Turkey.

Wüst credited the hard work and courage of migrants from Turkey, Italy, Spain, Greece, Morocco, Tunisia, Portugal, and the former Yugoslavia for helping build the foundation of the region's current prosperity. He noted their essential roles in steel production, mining, manufacturing, and various industrial sectors.

The recruitment agreement, signed on October 30, 1961, was initially intended as a temporary two-year solution to address labor shortages. However, the time limit was abolished in 1964, allowing for permanent residency and family reunification. Data from the Düsseldorf State Chancellery indicates that approximately 867,000 people from Turkey migrated to West Germany in the twelve years following the agreement, primarily to work in the Ruhr region.
