Hennes Weisweiler's legacy at Borussia Mönchengladbach
Hennes Weisweiler is recognized as one of the most influential coaches in German football history, particularly for his transformative era at Borussia Mönchengladbach between 1964 and 1975. Upon his arrival in 1964, the club was in the second-tier Regionalliga with limited financial resources. Weisweiler implemented a strategy of recruiting young, unknown players rather than expensive signings, leading the team to a Regionalliga championship in his first season and subsequent promotion to the Bundesliga.
Under his leadership, the team, known as the ‘Fohlenelf’, achieved significant success, including three German championships, the DFB-Pokal, and the UEFA Cup. His attacking style of play became a symbol of courageous and fast football.
Beyond Gladbach, Weisweiler’s career included roles at 1. FC Köln, where he was a co-founder and namesake of the club mascot, as well as coaching stints at FC Barcelona, the New York Cosmos, and Grasshopper Club Zürich. He also directed the DFB’s central coach training program from 1957 to 1970.
