Henoko boat accident: Parents visit site of fatal school trip capsizing

The parents of Chika Takeishi, a high school student who died in a boat capsizing accident off the coast of Henoko, Nago City, visited the site for the first time on October 18. The accident occurred in March 2026 involving two vessels carrying students from Doshisha International High School on a school trip, resulting in two fatalities.

At the beach overlooking the area where the accident took place, the parents offered flowers, sweets, and mango-flavored juice, which was a favorite of their daughter. During the visit, the mother expressed her grief, stating that her daughter likely never imagined she would not return from such a beautiful trip.

The father called for a transparent public report regarding the decision-making processes and timing of actions taken by the operators involved. Previously, the parents met with Okinawa Governor Koja to discuss safety measures for future school trips.
