Henry Winkler discusses starting therapy at age 70

Actor Henry Winkler has shared that he began therapy approximately a decade ago, at age 70, to address mental health struggles. He described the decision as a necessity to clear out “rancid garbage” from his mind after realizing he could no longer rationalize or smooth over his internal difficulties on his own.

Winkler, known for his role as Arthur ‘Fonzie’ Fonzarelli on Happy Days, noted that he previously struggled to let others in, including his wife, Stacey Weitzman. He compared his mental state prior to therapy to “Swiss cheese,” describing a feeling of being filled with holes and constant anxiety.

The actor also reflected on the period following the conclusion of Happy Days, noting that he felt lost and uncertain about his career when he continued to receive offers similar to his famous character rather than more substantial roles. He stated that he has seen a significant improvement in his mental health by learning to listen more and share his own views only when asked.
