Mediterranean region sees record heat and surging airport traffic

The summer of 2026 has seen significant environmental and economic shifts in the Mediterranean region. In San Marino, the summer was the hottest recorded since 1951, with average temperatures reaching 25 degrees Celsius and a severe lack of rainfall, leaving soil water reserves at only 8% capacity.

Marine data from the Consorzio Lamma-CNR indicates that July 2026 was the warmest July in the Mediterranean since 1993, with sea surface temperatures averaging approximately 27 degrees Celsius. This heatwave affected 79% of the Mediterranean basin.

In the aviation sector, Rimini’s Federico Fellini Airport has experienced record-breaking growth, surpassing its total 2025 passenger count by August 2026. The airport recorded 115,507 passengers in August alone, a 66.1% increase compared to the previous year. Similarly, Abruzzo Airport reported nearly one million passengers in the first eight months of the year, marking a 36% increase and signaling a strong trend in regional tourism.

Other regional developments include the approval of 36 new social housing units in Rimini and the upcoming EuroVolley 2026 championship in Modena.
