Heraklion court sentences five men for attack on cleaning workers
A court in Heraklion has sentenced five men to 19 months of suspended imprisonment and a 600 euro fine for an unprovoked attack on three municipal cleaning workers. The incident occurred in the early hours of November 9, 2020, while the workers were collecting refuse.
According to testimony, the attackers used wooden sticks to assault the workers, who were subsequently hospitalized with injuries. Representatives from the Heraklion Cleaning Workers Association described the event as a ‘day of terror’ and characterized the court's decision as a form of justice and vindication for the victims, despite the six-year delay in the trial.
Alexis Kalokairinos, the Mayor of Heraklion, testified as a prosecution witness. He stated that the ruling sends a message that violence and the search for victims within the city will not be tolerated and must be eliminated.
