Journalist Maria Antognianaki dies in Heraklion, Crete

Maria Antognianaki, a 46‑year‑old journalist for Crete TV and the news site neakriti.gr, was found dead in her parked car in the garage of her apartment in the Agios Ioannis district of Heraklion on the afternoon of Sunday, 5 July. Emergency services arrived after neighbours called, but she was already unresponsive. Initial reports from Crete TV said she suffered a cardiac arrest; a later forensic examination revealed a severe cerebral haemorrhage as the cause of death.

Her funeral service was held at the Holy Church of Saint John Knosso in Heraklion at 16:00, with the coffin displayed from 15:30. Her body was then buried in the new cemetery of Heraklion. Colleagues mourned her, describing her as “our joy, a beloved colleague who left us so suddenly and unfairly.”
