Crete infrastructure and energy development highlighted by Minister Papastavrou

During a visit to Heraklion, Greece, Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou highlighted Crete’s evolving role as an energy and tourism hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. Key infrastructure developments discussed include the electrical interconnection between Crete and Attica, the completion of the BOUAK road, and seismic surveys to be conducted by Chevron in the Ionian Sea starting in 2026.

Papastavrou inaugurated the renovated permanent exhibition of the Crete Natural History Museum of the University of Crete. The modernization project, costing 5.7 million euros, was funded by the Ministry of Environment and Energy through the Recovery and Resilience Fund as part of the ‘Greece 2.0’ National Plan, with support from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU.

Additionally, a Memorandum of Strategic Cooperation was signed between the new Heraklion International Airport and the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA). The partnership aims to protect the island’s biodiversity, promote sustainable tourism, and enhance environmental awareness through digital media and educational initiatives at the airport.
