Heraklion Municipality to discuss Nikos Kazantzakis Airport land use

The Mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokairinos, is bringing the ownership status and future utilization of the current Nikos Kazantzakis Airport site to the Municipal Council. The agenda includes presenting findings from a legal and technical investigation conducted by the Municipality regarding the land's ownership structure.

As a co-owner of the land alongside the Hellenic Republic, the Municipality of Heraklion intends to seek active participation in the developmental planning of the area once the airport ceases operations. The Mayor emphasized that the planning process must be collaborative with the state and other relevant authorities to ensure the development aligns with the Local Urban Plan of Heraklion, the Regional Spatial Framework of Crete, and the new Special Spatial Tourism Framework. The goal is for the site to serve as a catalyst for the overall urban renewal and improvement of the city's quality of life.
