Heraklion port faces fisherman protests and migrant housing crisis

The port of Heraklion is facing two distinct crises involving local industry and migrant management.

Professional fishermen in Heraklion have called for a protest on October 11 at the local port. The Association of Professional Fishermen of Heraklion Prefecture cited rising production costs, high fuel and energy prices, and low sale prices for fish as existential threats to the industry. They also criticized the government's new fishing code and inspection system, claiming it imposes “exterminating fines” on professionals. The association warned that the decline in fishing could threaten food security and increase reliance on imports.

Simultaneously, the Heraklion Port Organization (OLI) is pursuing legal action against the Port Authority regarding the use of the old “Psigiou” building as a temporary shelter for migrants. A court hearing is scheduled for October 15. OLI argues the building is unsuitable and seeks to protect its property. The situation has led to significant health concerns, including outbreaks of lice, which officials have described as a “health bomb.” Due to limited capacity, many migrants have been seen sleeping outdoors under thermal blankets to protect themselves from the weather.
